Bauhaus – The Inspiration Behind the Name Expand

The Bauhaus, a German word meaning "house of building", was a school founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany by architect Walter Gropius. The school emerged out of late-19th-century desires to reunite the applied arts and manufacturing, and to reform education.

MakerHaus is also a “house of building” with intent on providing our creative community access to resources for “making”. Through education and collaboration we provide skills and opportunity for great ideas to become commercialized and implemented.

The motivations behind the creation of the Bauhaus lay in anxieties about the soullessness of manufacturing and its products, and in fears about art's loss of purpose in society.

MakerHaus is focused on cultivating a creative membership with the ability to use the design process to develop sustainable solutions for global and local challenges.

Fine art and craft were brought together with the goal of problem solving for a modern industrial society. In so doing, the Bauhaus effectively leveled the old hierarchy of the arts, placing crafts on par with fine arts such as sculpture and painting, and paving the way for many of the ideas that have inspired artists in the late 20th century.

We envision our Haus as a sanctuary for all creative professionals to come together with the potential to solve the problems of our modern society.

Please note: there will be no class on July 4th.

Learn the art of speaker building from local masters! This six-week course begins with an overview of acoustics and the nuances of full range audio drivers.  From there, students will be guided through the wood shop getting hands-on training to build their own speaker cabinets for optimal acoustic performance. Apply your own custom graphics with our 150 watt laser engraver. (Students must supply the art work.)

    About the instructors:

Clark Blumenstein of Blumenstein Audio began his building speakers out of a tin shed during his pursuit of a music history major from Whitman College, delivering them by bicycle trailer to local college students. His interest in hi fi led him to an apprenticeship with Terry Cain of Cain & Cain Audio, who was revolutionizing full range speaker cabinet design, and later all the way to Japan to apprentice for renowned single driver maker, Feastrex. Now with his wife, Molly, he designs and builds compact high efficiency speakers from their West Seattle workshop that they've shipped to all seven continents.

Looking for a creative way to 'elevator pitch' your latest idea or invention? Or have you ever thought there might be a novel knocking around inside you? If so, and unless you've swallowed a smallish paperback, there's a good chance you have a story to tell!

In this one-day workshop you'll load up on creative problem-solving techniques to shape, test and sell your story, together with strategies to sustain your creative momentum to reach The End.

We'll start by improvising, quickly establishing context for your story premise with basic ingredients while using methods inspired by comedy improv. Next we'll work through activities to creatively disrupt conventional story elements for unique twists. In the third hour you'll get to run quick market tests of your story premise, as it's much faster (and cheaper) to learn with two sentences than with two-hundred pages. Lastly we'll explore ways to manage your writing project for even the busiest schedule.

    About the instructor:

Jay Chilcote is a writer, musician, design strategist, technologist, cyclist, three-time NaNoWriMo finisher and Raymond Queneau hobbyist. His passion is combining Design Thinking and Lean techniques from the business world for use in creative pursuits. Founder of Thunkwerks and the Seattle Intrapreneur Meetup group, Jay believes that everyone has a story to tell.

This isn't your ordinary intro level metal class! In this 5 week introductory course you'll make your very own cooking grill while learning the basics of metal fabrication and machining techniques! Topics include how to safely and efficiently use the equipment in our metal shop, including MIG welding basics like wire speeds and amperage settings (not to mention proper attire.) The goal of this course is to combine safe practices with hands-on experience. Students will leave with a project they create while learning the “ins” and “outs” of the shop as they go.

    About the instructor:

Don Hennick began working in wood during the late seventies as a antique restoration technician. He invented and patented a modular furniture design while studying with several Seattle fine wood workers in the early eighties. After taking night classes at the South Seattle Community College welding program, he moved into a metal working career that is still alive today. While studying at both the college machine shop and welding shop he invented and patented his barbecue grill design known as The Hydrogrill. It is a unique concept that uses water to regulate the temperature of the grilling surface.

This course will arm you with the skills to communicate your ideas visually! Storyboarding is a universal language-and can be a great tool for group brainstorming, classroom instruction, idea generation, and iteration.

This course quickly dives into the wonderful world of illustrative storytelling. If your drawing ability is a concern—think pictionary, not Da Vinci.  Storyboards are about the story first and the style of visual representation second. We will learn some fast, simple character design tricks and some basic spatial perspective techniques to quickly represent environments so that we can get the drawings "out of the way" while we tell our stories. We will then apply these drawing tools to various fun narrative exercises. Bring some No. 2 pencils (Ticonderoga's are the best) with or without erasers... you shouldn't really need them.

    About the instructor:

Bryan Gough is a Certified K-12 Teacher, Illustrator and Creative Director. He has been teaching art in Seattle, both publicly and privately, for the past 15 years. He also holds an MFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art, San Francisco, with an emphasis on the graphic novel and visual storytelling. Bryan believes "anyone can draw" and loves nothing more than to see others adopt that same sentiment.

Ever wondered how to make a giant cube of LED lights, a custom controller for your VJ or DJ application, or maybe your own robot? This 8-week course provides an overview of Arduino, an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. Because of it's versatility and ease-of-use, it's intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

Organized into four, two-session bundles, this course will cover the following topics:

    Arduino: In Review
This is an introductory workshop to answer, “What is Arduino and what can I do with it?” The hands-on format dives into the hardware and software behind Arduino and introduces basic concepts to help understand how we can use the platform to bridge digital and physical. Assumes no prior electronics or programming experience, but is also a great review for hackers who have tinkered with Arduino in the past.

    Arduino: Programming
This workshop goes deeper into the programming language behind Arduino. This workshop will cover variables, conditionals, loops, and functions in greater detail. The workshop will also cover some of the convenience functions that Arduino itself provides in pursuit of a simple sensor to RGB LED circuit/interface. Prerequisite: “Arduino: In Review” or prior Arduino experience.

    Arduino: Sensors and Sensing
Sensing is often an important component in any electronics project. This workshop will cover beginner-to-intermediate level Arduino topics perfect for makers, tinkerers, product designers, and hackers of all types who want learn how to add a bit more interactivity to their ideas. The workshop will introduce methods for interfacing with accelerometers, gyros, magnetometers, IR & proximity sensors, force-sensing resistors, hall-effect sensors, potentiometers, and buttons. Prerequisite: “Arduino: In Review” or prior Arduino experience.

    Arduino: The Internet of Things
Want to light an LED every time you get an email? This class is for you. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a unique but vague term to describe networks of devices surrounding us in daily life. This workshop will cover methods of connecting an Arduino to the internet and explore the many possibilities of “smart environments:” spaces that are monitored by connected sensors and perhaps responsive to input from external sources. Prerequisite: “Arduino: In Review” or prior Arduino experience.
